The three categories of work and travel experiences under the International Experience Canada (IEC) stream are International Co-Op Visa, Working Holiday Visa and Young Professionals Visa.
There are thirty-seven partner countries and citizens of these partner countries can apply to one or more of these 3 IEC categories. Citizens of non-partner countries may apply to IEC through a Recognized Organization.
The Working Holiday Visa issues the foreign national an open work permit under the International Experience Canada stream. It is designed for foreign nationals who intend to fund their vacation by working temporarily in Canada. A working holiday visa does not require a job offer and allows the holder to work for more than one employer in Canada and in more than one location too.
The International Co-Op Visa is an employer-specific work permit for a post-secondary student with a job offer for work placement or internship in Canada. This type of work permit is designed for foreign post-secondary students who intend to gain valuable overseas work experience in their field of study. The job offer for work placement or internship must be directly linked to the student’s field of study and a core requirement to complete the study program. International co-op (internship) visa requires the foreign national to work for same employer in the same location in Canada. Wages for internship will depend on prevailing provincial and territorial labour laws.
The Young professionals Visa is an employer-specific work permit for foreign nationals seeking to gain professional work experience in their chosen career or field of study. This visa requires the foreign national to possess a Canadian job offer that contributes towards their professional development. To count towards professional development, a job offer must be classified under Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) categories 0, 1, 2 and 3 of National Occupation Classification (NOC). A TEER 4 job in the foreign national’s field of study may be accepted if they submit their post-secondary certificates, diploma or degrees when applying for this work permit. This visa also requires the holder to work for same employer in the same location during their stay in Canada. This work must be a paid work and not self-employed, and the employer must meet all provincial or territorial labour laws including then minimum wage requirements.
Eligible candidates start the process by creating an online IEC profile and enter the IEC pool. If you are selected out of the pool, you will be issued an invitation to apply. Invited candidates will then apply for an open work permit under the relevant category they qualify for.
